Hiking Series #5 (Cancelled)

Wednesday, July 22, 2020

Amid concerns about the potential spread of COVID-19, all public programs, events, and trainings in state parks and forests are canceled. State parks remain open for passive recreation. For the most current information on facility closures, please visit the state parks website at http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/

Join a naturalist at 9 a.m. on select weekdays for hikes of varying length and difficulty. This year’s series visits trails on our public lands including state parks, state forests, and state game lands. Come out to get some exercise, learn about the area’s natural history, and relax in the fresh air. Hikes are free and open to the public. Well-behaved and friendly leashed dogs are welcome

TRAIL: Gamewire Trail
LENGTH: 5 miles TERRAIN: more difficult
MEET: Sand Spring Day Use Area at Hickory Run State Park - follow the main day use road to the very end, parking near the disc golf kiosk.

We'll hike out the Boulder Field return road to the Gamewire Trail, which starts near the turnpike overpass. From there, the trail meanders through the forest and follows the boundary of a long-gone fence put in place by General Harry Trexler. After passing through the organized group tenting area, we'll make our way back to our starting point.

Please wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water.
