[ARCHIVED] Small-Town Getaway, Big on Relaxation

Susquehanna River in Shickshinny

By: Megan Filak

It’s called the “Gateway to the Five Mountains” and just driving down Route 11 in Shickshinny it’s easy to see how it earned its nickname. The small town’s center is surrounded by rolling mountains in the distance with the Susquehanna River running parallel to Main Street on its way through the mountains. This small area packs what you need for a weekend getaway full of relaxing moments, wine tastings, beautiful views, and plenty of waterfalls.

Start your weekend escape by checking in at Paper Mill Pines Bed and Breakfast. Wake up in a cozy country home and start your day with a homemade breakfast, sipping your coffee while watching the birds flutter around the pond, steps from the backdoor.

After breakfast, head to Five Mountain Outfitters where they will set you up with a kayak rental and everything you need to know to enjoy a few hours on the Susquehanna River. Soak in the beauty along the riverbanks in the shadow of the mountains. As you paddle, keep an eye out for bald eagles, known to make their homes along the river.  When your kayak trip is over, refresh with handmade, local ice cream at Udder Delites. Then enjoy a relaxing walk along the river on the Susquehanna Warrior Trail.

Before the day ends, make a stop at Pisano Family Wines. Sit back and listen to live music in the woods as you sample their homemade wine. If wine isn’t your thing, pick from a variety of Pennsylvania beers.

Wake up early the next day and make the short drive to Ricketts Glen State Park. It’s home to a number of trails to match just about every skill level, including the most popular Falls Trail. The Falls Trail includes breathtaking views of the park’s 22 named waterfalls, including the must-see, 94-foot Ganoga Falls. If you’re looking for a day that’s a little more low-key, grab your beach towel to relax in the sand and take a swim at Lake Jean, located within Ricketts Glen State Park.

Finish the day back in Shickshinny at Setter Fields Vineyard. Enjoy a wine tasting, sipping local wine made from grapes grown just down the road. Watch the sun set over the rolling countryside while sampling their unique blends.

Tucked between the mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania and still just a quick drive from major cities, is all you need for a relaxing weekend getaway!
