Free-flowing down the mountain, the 22 named waterfalls at Ricketts Glen State Park are an incredible sight and a fun way to experience a bit of the local landscape that makes up Northeastern Pennsylvania. But once your hike is finished, you can sample a different kind of local flavor just down the road, at Colonel Ricketts Hard Cider Winery.
The family-owned business gets its name from a local Civil War hero and uses apples grown nearby. They combine those fresh apples with a family recipe and old whiskey barrels to create their smooth hard cider. The flavors change each year, depending on the season’s growing conditions and types of apples available.
During the summer, you can sample the cider at the Green Acres Barn on Red Rock Road in Benton. At the historic barn, you can also browse and buy antiques and local products. When the autumn chill creeps in, the tastings move to the Cider Shack right next door to where the cider is made on 3rd Street in Benton.
Sipping the cold cider, served by the friendly faces of Colonel Ricketts, is the perfect way to end a day of exploring the trails.
