[ARCHIVED] Holiday Season Shines in Luzerne County

Cool News 3

The holiday season is all about making memories here in Luzerne County. From November through January, concerts, festivals and celebrations bring people together while lights transform neighborhoods. All across the area’s mountains and valleys, tradition runs deep and perhaps can best be seen (or smelled) in the area’s kitchens as poppy seed rolls bake, latkes are fried, pizzelle cools and tamales are steamed. Food and fun are hallmarks of the season in Northeast Pennsylvania and the area provides plenty of opportunities to find both.

The holiday season kicks off when Santa Claus cruises into town during the Wilkes-Barre Christmas Parade.  It’s a busy day for old St. Nick as he also makes an appearance at Wyoming Valley Mall’s Santa Fest.

Even finding the perfect present turns festive in Luzerne County.  The weekend after Thanksgiving the NEPA Craft Show takes over the Kingston Armory and vendors set out their wares at the Midtown Village Pop-Up Shop in Downtown Wilkes-Barre. December starts with Wassailfest and Holiday Night Market in Downtown Hazleton, an Old-Fashioned Holiday Market in Downtown Wilkes-Barre and Christmas in Pittston complete with horse-drawn carriage rides, caroling and tree lighting.

Luzerne County offers so many ways to experience the season. You can celebrate with cows and sheep during Christmas in the Barns or by sipping tea in a Victorian country cottage, both at the Lands at Hillside Farms. With a little bit of holiday magic, you can step back in time to Christmases of long ago at Eckley Miners’ Village and the Denison and Swetland Houses.  Watch runners make their across the Market Street Bridge during the annual Torch Run to commemorate Hanukkah then share in a traditional dinner.  Sit back and take in the sights and sounds of the season during one of the many performances that will grace area stages, both large and small.

No matter how you celebrate or where you go throughout Luzerne County this holiday season, you can be sure to find the traditions that make this area shine. You can see a whole list of holiday happenings and things to do on the Visit Luzerne County Events Calendar.
