Happy PA Wine Month!

Wine

Raise a glass! October is officially Pennsylvania Wine Month and with more than 200 wineries across the state there is a lot to celebrate. According to the Pennsylvania Winery Association, our state is ranked 7th in the country for the number of wineries, with plenty of places to sip in and near Luzerne County.

Many of the wineries in Northeast Pennsylvania, like Bartolai Winery, pull from family tradition brought here from Italy and perfected over generations. Family history is also in the walls of Mucciolo Family Winery, housed in the neighborhood general store opened in 1929 by the great-grandmother of the winery’s owner.

Wineries here in and near Luzerne County also come with a view like the sprawling landscape of Maiolatesi Wine Cellars and the rolling hills that surround Setter Fields Vineyard.  Each winery also offers a wide selection of wines like Pisano Family Wines and Honey Hole Winery, which puts a unique spin on their wines with flavors like Seville Orange Sangria and Green Apple.  There is even Colonel Ricketts Hard Apple Cider Winery, just down the road from Ricketts Glen State Park, which uses an old family recipe to turn local apples into hard cider.

With so many options just in our corner of Pennsylvania, it’s easy to see how the state produces more than 1.6 million gallons of wine each year.  Follow our Beer, Wine & Shine Trail to learn more about our wineries and find more great places to sip the local flavor.
